Egypt is a country classed as having a high risk of terrorist attacks in tourist areas and resorts. Egyptian security forces police ‘at risk’ regions with tenacity and most visits to the country are trouble-free. The risk, however, should be taken on board before travelling to the country. Vaccination for a number of diseases – yellow fever, malaria – may be required, but are not always necessary: check with a doctor before travelling. Bilharzia is present in the country, so paddling and swimming in fresh water should be avoided – chlorinated bodies of water are fine, however. Water in main towns and cities is chlorinated and safe to drink, though it may cause mild stomach upsets – bottled water is advised. Water from other areas should be boiled or otherwise sterilised before use. Meat and fish should be well cooked before consumption, and vegetables and fruit should be peeled and well cooked. Dairy products carry a risk and milk should be boiled before consumption – tinned and powdered milk is available, and is advisable.
