Roads in Egypt are generally of a good standard in main towns and cities, as well as on the major highways connecting the regions. Roads off the beaten track, however, tend to be of a far poorer standard. There is an effective and affordable bus service covering the majority of the country, though services can be incredibly cramped and uncomfortable, they still offer reliability and low costs. Taxi services stretch across the country and there are also shared vehicle services available. Other public transport services include Africa’s first underground system in Cairo, along with tram services. Rail travel in Egypt is comprehensive and there are a number of different services available for any needs a person might have – from air conditioned first class sleepers down to bog-standard, crowded, local trains and everything in between. Services are affordable, reliable and are one of the best ways of getting around the country. There are regular internal flights offered by Egypt Air, though they are only really recommended for those with less time and more cash. There are regular passenger ferries available for transport through the country’s waterways, as well as the classic Nile cruises. Whilst a lot of the Nile transport is merely a tourist attraction, there are many taxi services and the like as well.
